What Is Fumigation? And Why We Refuse to Do It.

What Is Fumigation, Exactly?

Fumigation is a pest-control method where grains, pulses, flours, and other stored foods are sealed in an airtight space — a warehouse, container, or silo — and filled with a toxic gas. The gas is meant to kill insects, larvae, and eggs hiding inside the stock before it's packaged and shipped out.

The two most commonly used fumigants in the food industry are aluminium phosphide and methyl bromide. Aluminium phosphide reacts with moisture in the air to release phosphine gas, a potent poison that is dangerous to humans in high doses. Methyl bromide works similarly, penetrating deep into grain piles to control pests.

After fumigation, the food is aired out for a set period before it's considered safe to package. In theory, most of the gas dissipates.

Why Do Big Companies Do It?

For companies processing food at massive scale, fumigation solves a real problem. When you're storing tonnes of wheat, rice, or pulses in central warehouses for weeks or months before they're milled, packed, and distributed across the country, pest infestation is a serious risk.

Fumigation is fast, economical, and effective at industrial volumes. It doesn't require refrigeration and can treat large storage areas at once. For a business model built on long shelf life, centralized storage, and bulk distribution, it is a practical way to control pests.

Why Is It Worth Being Cautious About?

Fumigant residues on food are regulated, and permitted levels are intended to be safe when the process is followed correctly. But there are a few concerns worth understanding:

  • Residues are monitored, not necessarily zero. Proper aeration and monitoring are important before food is packaged.

  • Storage conditions matter. The longer food is stored, the greater the need for effective pest management.

  • Fumigation is a downstream solution. It controls pests during storage rather than addressing the wider supply-chain conditions that make long-term pest control necessary.

  • The process is largely invisible to consumers. Customers generally do not know the storage and pest-control methods used before a product reaches the shelf.

None of this means every fumigated grain or pulse is unsafe. It means that the way food is stored and processed deserves transparency.

What We Do at Natureship Instead

We built Natureship around a simple idea: the less time food spends sitting around, the less it needs to be protected from anything.

We don't stockpile. Most of our products — chana sattu, jau sattu, besan, and flours — are hand-roasted and stone-ground only after you place an order. No warehouse full of pre-milled flour sits for months waiting to be shipped. What you receive is made days, not months, before it reaches your door.

We source close to the land. Our chana, jau, and pulses come directly from small farms and villages in Bihar and Jharkhand, while our Diara pulses grow on the mineral-rich floodplains of the Ganga. Shorter, more traceable supply chains help us keep the journey from farm to kitchen more visible.

We keep the process visible, not hidden. Every pack carries what we call a Didi's Seal — a note on which didi hand-roasted and stone-ground your sattu, and which didi packed it. It's our way of saying: nothing here is anonymous.

We rely on traditional storage wisdom, not gas chambers. Small-batch processing, quick turnover, and time-tested practices from the villages we work with help us keep our food moving instead of storing large quantities for long periods.

The trade-off is real: we can't produce at the scale a large industrial food company can, and we can't offer the same long shelf life. What we offer instead is food that's traceable back to a specific field, a specific person's hands, and a process you can actually ask us about.

Fumigation is one part of a much bigger food-storage system. At Natureship, we'd rather shorten the distance between farm and kitchen and keep our process as transparent as possible.
